Promoting water safety and reducing risk of drowning for children

The Create Healthy Wellness Center will serve as an official host location for the 2024 World’s Largest Swimming Lesson event June 20 at 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to all children across Hill Country communities.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) is a global water safety event focused on teaching life-saving water competency skills to help prevent drowning and make water recreation more fun and building awareness about the vital importance of teaching kids to swim.

“Water safety and swimming skills are some of the most important lessons we can give our children,” said Dawn Bourgeois, Create Heathy Wellness Center director. “We’re partnering with a great organization to equip our community with the education and resources they need to stay safe in the water.”

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under age four and the second leading cause for children ages 4 to 14. More than half of children ages 4-17 cannot perform the basic water safety skills they need to save their life, according to the American Red Cross, underscoring the crucial need for more water safety and swimming lessons for children. Research shows that just a single month of formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning in children by 88 percent.
