Everyone knows that jumping in the pool for a few laps or a water aerobics class is great exercise — not to mention a great way to beat the Texas heat! But did you also know swimming offers a number of additional health benefits?

Health Benefits of Swimming:

  1. Swimming is easy on your joints: Swimming is a low-impact workout that minimizes stress on the joints, making it an ideal for people with arthritis. Swimming has been shown to reduce joint pain and stiffness, and can even help improve mobility.
  2. Swimming makes your lungs stronger: The controlled breathing that swimming requires (especially when underwater) forces the lungs to work more efficiently and expands their capacity. Improving lung capacity, endurance, and breath control are key lung health benefits that help swimmers get in shape and go through everyday activities without feeling winded.
  3. Swimming is an ideal workout for older adults: Swimming offers a safe, low-impact workout, ideal for maintaining muscle mass and flexibility while reducing the risk of injury. Studies have also shown that swimming can reduce the risk of falling for older adults, as swimming works every major muscle group and improves range of motion.
  4. Swimming boosts heart health: From improved circulation to lowering blood pressure, swimming is a fantastic cardiovascular workout that improves heart health. Swimming boosts cardiovascular strength and endurance, helping your body transport oxygen more efficiently and strengthening your heart without putting pressure on your joints.
